Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
