As any major prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
