Much like the recent storm swept through the north-west the previous evening, Manchester City overwhelmed the visitors aside at the their home ground. It was a emphatic three goal win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their title credentials as they consolidated their place at the league summit.

Successive Losses for United

This result represented back-to-back league defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, leaving them seven points off the league leaders with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' capacity to juggle league and European soccer with a limited roster has been a hotly discussed topic since they secured entry to the European competition. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this ability. Unfortunately for the away side, they seemed tired all game, the memorable win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a handful of changes. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added energy, although the omission of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

City, in comparison, have fewer loading issues. The City coach made a single alteration from last week’s win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since recovering from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

The trouble started to gather for the United boss and his squad from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose dynamic attack manipulated and pulled the visitors apart with a superb initial 45 minutes showing that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.

Second Half

The clearest substitution came from the United manager at the break as Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Park came most likely to score, hitting the upright, but the away team were creatively abject and did not manage to produce a solitary shot on target.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have extended their advantage when a delightful Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it mattered little to the winning team. Previously unable to overcome any team who finished above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a commanding situation after the opening fixtures.
