Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
